Nokia mobile explodes at Asansol . Ever wonder why we don't see headlines like that so often? Mostly it is "Woman dies of pressure cooker explosion", or some such anonymous story...well not entirely anonymous, it will tell us everything about the consumer and his family, but never speak about the brand. Ever wondered why? Welcome to the world of journalism. In today's media implosion, the definition of a media is something that "delivers an audience to an advertiser". Obviously you dont want to displease the advertiser, since revenues come from them. Hence the names are rubbed out. No wonder ".........a spokesperson said it was a "fraudulent attempt to malign the company". I wonder how the name got printed in the first place??
Are management consultants any different? In biblical times the king (the wealthiest entrepreneur) was given laws to live by. When he strayed from the narrow path, the prophet would come down from the hills. The city would take notice and the king would squirm under the prophet's wrath. This was possible because the prophet was not dependant on the king financially at all. Today we have a set of management consultants who are paid by the business they work for. Even us business school faculty will suck up to a big guy if it fetches us enough bucks. But this is WRONG. If the consultants job is to tell business a better way of doing things, then they have to be free of financial considerations. Perhaps the fee should be charged as a sign on fee, irrespective of the deliverables?
